The Transition Movement began in England and Ireland with its roots in permaculture and quickly expanded to embrace the concepts of community resiliency and self-reliance in the face of peak oil and climate change. Knowing that these twin challenges are some of the most crucial humanity currently faces, the Transition Movement is about involving residents, businesses, public bodies, community organizations and schools to begin the dialogue of rethinking the way we live and making conscious choices about what kind of community and world we want to live in.
The Transition Movement is now global and offers an infrastructure and strategy to facilitate communities wanting to act to face this challenge and unleash the collective imagination and energy of residents to find answers. The fact that this is a very active and growing movement is testament to people around the world deciding to come together, learn from each other and take action.
Change to our way of life from climate change and peak oil is coming, and a planned strategy to deal with the coming changes will leave communities in a stronger position to respond. Waiting on government to act is nonessential, since the responsibility to do so lies with each individual, and is ours collectively.
Therefore it is up to people in their communities to begin the task themselves to explore and follow strategies for practical action to reduce local carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuel; and to build local resilience and sustainability in the areas of food, energy, health care, and economic development in order to withstand shock to the systems crucial to our daily lives.
